  • Musina

ASTER False colour composite where RGB = 10, 5, 1 This image represents a spectacular example of the use of ASTER data for geological mapping. The image covers an area in the Limpopo Province of South Africa with the Limpopo River marking the border between South Africa and Zimbabwe. Lithological differences are manifested by colour variations while structural features such as faults, folds and re-folded folds are clearly visible.

  • The Cape Fold Belt

Landsat 7 ETM+ False Colour Composite where RGB = 7, 4, 6 The image covers a section of the Cape Fold Belt close to the town of Ladismith in the Klein Karoo of South Africa. The lack of vegetation in the study area means that subtle mineralogical differences between lithologies are manifested by colour variations in this false colour composite. Additionally, structural features such as folds and faults are clearly visible.

Recent developments with regards to PhD research

The research proposes the development of advanced differential radar interferometry (DInSAR) techniques for applications related to geohazards assessment in South Africa. The geohazards to be investigated include the monitoring of surface subsidence associated with mining activities. The availability of ground-based measurements of subsidence will provide the ideal test-case for methodology development of advanced DInSAR techniques, including the polarimetric interferometry (PolInSAR) technique. Successful application of the technique will imply that the methodology can be applied to areas where deformation is expected, but not yet proven. Such deformation includes the detection of ...
